The Pink Ribbon Campaign Supports Early Detection of Breast Cancer

May is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we are pleased to announce that once again this spring, JOIK is participating in the Pink Ribbon charity campaign, which aims to support the early detection of breast cancer and prevention projects.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among women in Estonia. Over 900 new cases are diagnosed each year, and unfortunately, this number is increasing. However, scientific research confirms that breast cancer detected early is highly treatable—participating in screening programs can reduce the risk of mortality by up to 35%.

One of the key tools for early detection is the Estonian Cancer Society’s mammography bus, which brings screening services closer to home. In 2024 alone, 8,879 examinations were carried out in cooperation with Viljandi Hospital, resulting in the discovery of 34 breast cancer cases, 22 of which were at an early stage.

Since the lifespan of a mammograph depends on the number of images taken, the Cancer Society’s current mammography bus will need to be replaced within the next couple of years. Therefore, now is the time to start raising funds for a new 3D mammograph. The new device will enable more accurate diagnoses, utilizing artificial intelligence and the latest radiographic methods. It will be purchased solely through donations and support from partners.

Help Yourself

When it comes to breast cancer, early detection is crucial. The greatest act of self-care a woman can do is to perform regular breast self-examinations and attend a medical check-up every two years. Here’s a quick guide on what to watch for:
