Safe and effective sun defence. Naturally!
Warm summer is about to begin and we’re hoping for a long and beautiful one. Sun can be very beneficial in small doses, boosting our vitamin D levels, giving us a lovely complexion and generally making us happy. But, if you plan on spending a lot of time in summer sun, it’s wise to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. This summer you can do that with natural and certified JOIK Organic sun defence products. Let’s explore a little bit deeper, why should we choose natural sun protection.
.
What exactly is natural sun protection?
.
Sun defence filters can be largely dividend into two – chemical and physical filters.
Chemical filters are based on components that penetrate skin and absorb UV-rays inside skin.
Physical filters are based on natural minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, creating a physical blocker that reflects harmful UVA and UVB rays, protecting skin from burning and ohter harmful effects of sun.

.
JOIK Organic sun defence products contain a very good-quality non-nano zinc oxide as a filter, offering broad-spectrum protection both from sunburn (UVB) as well as photoaging (UVA).
.
Protect yourself as well as nature
.
In 2018 Hawaii became the first place in the world to ban using and selling synthetic sun protection products, because the chemicals in the products are harmful to coral reefs and ohter ocean’s ecosystems. A study found that the chemicals seep into young coral and contribute to coral bleaching and death. Hawaii’s example was soon followed by several ohter places. By now synthetic filter products are banned in following locations: Key West, California, US Virgin Islands, Aruba, Bonaire, Palau. It will probably not take long until ohter popular tourist areas follow suit and enforce the ban.
JOIK Organic sun defence products contain non-nano zinc oxide which is completly safe both for human skin as well as for corals and other marine life.

All our problems are solved
.
Let’s tackle effectiveness first. Natural products are basically as effective as synthetic products based on chemical filters. However, it is always wise to check if the products has undergone all necessary testing and if the producing company is trustworthy.
JOIK Organic sun defence products’ SPF has been tested with in vivo method according to ISO 24444: 2020 standard. To put it more bluntly, it means, it has been tested on actual humans in accredited laboratory.
And is it easy to use? It is true that natural sun protection products can have very different quality, aesthetically speaking. When we look at some of the more old-school products, they tended to leave a white cast on skin and they were quite difficult to apply. The products can vary, for sure, as not all zinc oxide types are comparable. However, we believe JOIK products will be a very positive surprise – we use a high quality premium class zinc oxide, that absolutely does not leave a white layer on skin and is very easy to apply.
The products have undergone preliminary testing in real life and on real humans, meaning our test group has had a chance to evaluate the products and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Some examples of user experience:
Katrin: „The lotion absorbs really quickly and leaves no visible layer on skin. I also like that it has no scent.“
Marin: „This must be the quickest absorbing natural sunscreen I’ve ever tried. It also leaves the skin really soft and moisturised.“
Leelo: „I expected a natural product to leave a heavy layer on my skin and I was prepared for that, because I will anyway choose natural over synthetic, but there’s no white layer. I love this lotion and will surely be using it both on me and my children to enjoy sun safely“
.
Does higher SPF give better protection?
.
Not necessarily. Sun protection factor (SPF) represents how well the sunscreen protects against UVB rays. When applied correctly, SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93 percent of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks almost 97 percent of UVB radiation, and SPF 50 blocks only a single percent more. SPF 100 blocks around 99 percent, which sounds great, but it may tempt people to stay in the sun too long and actually get more sun exposure than they would have if they had reapplied more frequently with a lower SPF.
SPF 25 and SPF 50 last the same amount of time. Rather than signifying how long you can safely be in the sun, the SPF number is actually related to the amount of solar exposure you are protected from. UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the summer, which means you will get more solar exposure and have a higher chance of getting a sunburn in the afternoon than you would in the morning.
JOIK Organic selection includes lotions suitable both for face and body with SPF 15 and 25 and sun defence stick with SPF35, especially suitable for protecting sensitive areas like nose, ears, lips, scars.

Tips of how to use natural sun defence products:
.
- Apply a generous amount of lotion. The most common mistake is to use too little product. Adults should use at least a shot glass full of to evenly cover the body. A half teaspoon or so should be used to cover your face, neck, and chest. To achieve the recommended amount, start with a little bit at a time and allow it to absorb before applying another sheer layer.
- Don’t be lazy with sun protection. Don’t forget often-missed spots like lips, the tops of your ears and feet, and your eyelids. And make sure you wear sunscreen even on cloudy days – UV rays pass through clouds.
- Reapply at least every two hours and after sweating, swimming, or wiping skin with a towel.
- Practice sun safely! Sun defence lotion is useful and necessary but don’t fry in the sun for too long and seek shade when the UV-index is too high. With sun – less is more.
