Dermatologically proven action against pigment spots!

In the summer of 2024, we were thoroughly immersed in product development at JOIK. We researched and brainstormed the main skin concerns that people are seeking solutions for, and we familiarized ourselves with the best natural active ingredients that could address these issues. Most people’s desires are similar – we all want more youthful, smoother, and even-toned skin. When it comes to beautiful complexion and clear skin, there are few ingredients that deliver better results than Vitamin C. This powerful antioxidant can brighten the skin, even out the complexion, and reduce pigment spots. So, Vitamin C was one of the active ingredients we definitely wanted to include in a product.

After a long development process, we created the brightening double serum with 15% Vitamin C and rose hydrolate, which found its place in the Re-Boost Glow product line. Vitamin C is a clever ingredient that retains its beneficial properties better in an oil-based product. Therefore, our serum is double-chambered – one chamber contains an oil-based serum with 15% pure Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), while the other chamber contains rose hydrolate enriched with lingonberry and cloudberry extracts, which further soothes and nourishes the skin, making the product lighter on the skin and better absorbed.

The Re-Boost Glow vitamin C double serum underwent thorough and controlled testing at a skin testing laboratory in Poland in November

Twenty volunteers tested the product according to provided instructions over the course of 4 weeks, using the serum daily. After the study, the testers completed a questionnaire about the product.

The skin condition of ten volunteers was assessed by a dermatologist, and instrumental tests were performed to measure skin brightness, firmness, elasticity, and melanin levels (pigment spots). The skin condition of the selected volunteers was photographed with special equipment to visualize the reduction of pigment spots.

First, let’s look at how the product performed in evening out skin tone

The Konica Minolta 600D spectrophotometer measured the skin tone/color intensity. The test included spectrophotometric measurement of facial skin color intensity in the Lab color space. The study determined the “L” parameter, which reflects the skin tone/color intensity. After 4 weeks of regular product use, the “L” value measured by the spectrophotometer increased by 1.55 units (3%) for all volunteers, confirming the product’s effect of evening out and brightening the skin tone.

Next, we will examine the serum’s effect on pigment spots

The MEXAMETER MX18 Courage-Khazaka measured the melanin content in pigment spots (M-melanin parameter). The study was conducted using a digital probe that measures skin color intensity at a specific wavelength and presents the result in numerical form. After 4 weeks of regular product use, the photometrically measured “M” value decreased by an average of 23% in 9 out of 10 volunteers, indicating a reduction in melanin content in hyperpigmentation and a lightening of skin tone (reduction in pigment spots).

Third, let’s examine how the product affected skin firmness and elasticity

Firmness and elasticity were measured using the Cutometer MPA 580 device. Based on the obtained results of skin biomechanical parameter measurements, it can be concluded that the tested cosmetic product helped improve the following after 4 weeks of use:
→ Skin firmness in 8 out of 10 volunteers, ranging from 5% to 19% (group average of 10% compared to baseline measurements).
→ Skin elasticity in 8 out of 10 volunteers, ranging from 5% to 15% (group average of 8% compared to baseline measurements).
