Everything you need to know about natural deodorants

These days probably everyone has heard stories about possibly harmful effects of synthetic antiperspirants and deodorants. We’re deliberately saying „possibly harmful“ as so far there is no scientific research to prove that aluminium has any connection with developing either cancer or Alzheimer’s disease as many are claiming. However, if you can get rid of the unpleasant odour of sweat naturally, why not switch to natural and organic deodorants? Possibly harmful ingredients are only a part of the problem, the ohter part is the fact that antiperspirants are developed to block sweating, penetrating into skin pores and preventing body’s natural ability to get rid of toxins with sweating.

.

Allow your body to sweat

Let’s talk a little about body’s natural sweating response. Antiperspirants contain aluminium compounds called aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium, which block sweating by penetrating into skin pores. It helps stop sweating and your underarms will be dry, but without sweating we also cannot get rid of any harmful toxins. Plus, by penetrating the pores  those compounds may cause irritation or folliculitis. That’s why it’s not advised to use antiperspirants directly after shaving, as skin is more sensitive due to micro cuts and harmful ingredients can be more easily absorbed.

Natural mineral deodorant can be applied on skin straight after shaving, it dries fast, absorbs sweat and helps to inhibit and control unpleasant body odour, ensuring a safe and natural freshness all day long. Natural deodorant does not clog pores and allows the body to breathe and release toxins through the natural sweating process while inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria and preventing unpleasant odour. Natural deodorants often contain good ingredients making the product more efficient. In JOIK Organic deodorants those ingredients are sage extract and diatomaceous earth powder, which helps to control body odors, prevent unwanted moisture and keep the underarms dry.

Alum or aluminium?

We are often asked what is this potassium alum used in our deodorants. Is it the same bad synthetic aluminium? To answer shortly, then no, it isn’t. But to explain mor thoroughly, we use potassium alum or potassium aluminium sulfate, which is the chemical name of natural mineral salts also known as mountain crystal. Mineral salts used in JOIK deodorants has been approved for usage in Cosmos Organic certified products, which signals that this is a natural and safe ingredient. Those salts do contain aluminium but this compound differs significantly from synthetic aluminium compounds used in typical antiperspirants with names like aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium, which absorb into pores to block sweating.

We’ve included potassium alum in our products for two reasons. Firstly, it’s of natural origin. Secondly, mineral salts do not clock pores and do not stop sweating but instead they act as pH adjusters on the surface of skin, creating an environment where bacteria cannot grow, thus ensuring a safe and natural freshness. That’s also the reason why our product is called a deodorant, not an antiperspirant.

What to consider when using natural mineral deodorant

Natural deodorant neutralizes odours, it does not stop sweating. It is not an antiperspirant. That’s one of the good things about natural deodorant, that it does not stop body’s natural sweating process.

After applying the deodorant let it dry for a moment, before putting clothes on. Deodorant contains diatomaceous earth powder, which makes the product very effective, but needs to dry for a moment.

If you have been using antiperspirants your body needs some time adjusting to natural deodorant and managing its normal sweat production.

No bad smell but also no bad ingredients

In addition to synthetic aluminium many antiperspirants also contain other chemical compounds which should rather be avoided. Most common ones are triclosan, which tends to accumulate in fat cells; BHT or Butylated Hydroxytoluene, which is potentially dangerous both for us as well as the environment; and oil-based compound called propylene glycol.

JOIK Organic natural deodorants do not contain any harmful ingredients, but do contain body friendly ingredients like the aforementioned mineral salts, calming aloe juice, irritation alleviating sage and essential oils for aroma.

Trust certificates

If all this talk about harmful ingredients is too complicated and INCI list is impossible to read, we suggest you trust certificates. If a cosmetic product carries ECOCERT or NATRUE certificate, you can be sure only pure ingredients are used. There are other labels and stamps, some of them trustworthy, others not so much, but these two certificates can surely be trusted.

All JOIK Organic products are certified according to COSMOS standard by EcoCert. They Control both our ingredients as well as finished products. The standard promotes using processing and manufacturing that are clean and respectful of human health and the environment. This gives us the certainty to trust the ingredients chosen for our products.
